U.S. media: The EU may cut foreign staff due to budget constraints
U.S. media reported on the 28th that due to tight fiscal budgets, the European Union may cut the number of staff at its representative offices in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Politico cited internal documents stating that the EU intends to adjust the scale of its diplomatic missions, reducing the number of personnel in embassies in African, Asian, and Latin American countries and regions. The EU has over 140 representative offices worldwide. An unnamed EU official told Politico, "We will leave very small delegations in countries like Sudan and Niger," adding that this move is not correct, "especially at a time when the U.S. government's interest in the outside world seems to be diminishing." Some EU officials are concerned that this measure may raise worries about the EU losing diplomatic influence in regions such as Africa and Latin America. According to reports, the new European Commission and the recently approved High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, will discuss this measure in December
