Microsoft has established a new AI health business department, recruiting multiple employees from Google's DeepMind.
According to the Financial Times, Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google's subsidiary DeepMind and head of AI at Microsoft, is forming a new team focused on consumer health and has &#34;poached&#34; several employees from his former company DeepMind for key positions.
The report states that the employees &#34;poached&#34; by Suleyman include former head of DeepMind's health department Dominic King, clinical research scientist Christopher Kelly, and two other employees. Among them, King will serve as the vice president of Microsoft's AI health business department.
The AI health department established by Microsoft will focus on developing health-related applications for generative AI users. It has previously hired Peter Hames, CEO of UK digital health startup Big Health, and Bay Gross, co-founder of digital healthcare provider Cityblock Health.
The healthcare market is becoming an important growth area for AI technology, making it a &#34;battleground&#34; for major AI giants. A survey by Deloitte this year found that 48% of respondents had asked generative AI chatbots health-related questions.
Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, has also long focused on the healthcare field. Since Suleyman founded the health business in 2016, it has grown into a team of 100 people and launched an application for monitoring patients' vital signs based on the medical data of 1.6 million patients through partnerships with 10 public hospitals in the UK
