Following Elon Musk, OpenAI's competitor Anthropic has also poured cold water on OpenAI's recently announced joint venture project &#34;Stargate.&#34;
On January 22, local time Wednesday, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, expressed skepticism to Bloomberg about whether Stargate could secure the $500 billion in funding, calling the planned project &#34;a bit chaotic.&#34;
Amodei stated that it is difficult to understand the Stargate project. &#34;It is still unclear how much actual funding is involved and how much has already been committed,&#34; and it is also unclear how the Trump administration will participate in the project.
Although he questioned Stargate, Amodei believes that the Trump administration's focus on creating the capacity to provide energy for AI infrastructure domestically is &#34;a good thing.&#34; He also expressed support for simplifying regulatory and licensing processes and downplayed the impact of Trump's revocation of a Biden administration executive order related to AI. The executive order required AI companies to share key information, such as safety testing results of powerful AI systems, with the U.S. federal government.
According to Jiemian, Trump signed the first batch of executive orders on his first day in office on January 20, abolishing 78 policies from the previous Biden administration, including the executive order regarding AI regulation. The original executive order required the U.S. government to regulate the risks posed by AI and improve relevant standards and testing tools to ensure the safety and reliability of AI systems.
Amodei stated that the executive order was relatively simple and did not have much effect, so its cancellation is not a big deal.
Wall Street Journal previously mentioned that on Tuesday evening Eastern Time, Trump confirmed at the White House the joint establishment of Stargate by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, planning a total investment of $500 billion in AI infrastructure. OpenAI subsequently released a statement saying that the first round of investment of $100 billion would &#34;immediately begin deployment,&#34; with SoftBank and OpenAI as the main partners of Stargate, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son serving as chairman, SoftBank taking on financial responsibilities, and OpenAI handling operational responsibilities.
After OpenAI announced on social media X, Musk commented on the tweet, stating that the Stargate project actually cannot provide that much funding. His post read:
