Supply chain management and engineering management may sound like dull and profound subjects, but their content is quite &#34;down-to-earth&#34; and closely related to our daily lives. Rainbow, a second-year student in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, personally shared the important role of technology in supply chain management. These technologies not only optimize business operations but also promote innovation and enhance market competitiveness.
Intelligent Management Systems Enhance Business Competitiveness
The supply chain refers to the entire process from raw material procurement to product delivery to consumers, including production, transportation, warehousing, and sales. Rainbow indicated that the supply chain has entered the intelligent era, where big data, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things technologies can monitor and optimize processes in real-time, improving efficiency and market responsiveness. This technological model is rewriting supply chain management and operational methods, making research and education in related fields more focused on technological innovation and practical applications. Rainbow further validated the theory with everyday application scenarios: &#34;For example, when shopping online, the system recommends products based on purchase history and preferences.&#34; Merchants can analyze consumer demand to simultaneously optimize inventory management and delivery efficiency. Intelligent supply chains are equally important in the business environment; manufacturing companies can monitor production lines in real-time to identify problems and avoid delays, while logistics companies can optimize transportation routes through intelligent scheduling, reducing time and costs. The application of these technologies not only enhances the competitiveness of enterprises but also drives industry innovation to cope with a fiercely competitive market environment.
Courses Emphasize the Development of Comprehensive Abilities
In the JUPAS program, students can choose a combination course in intelligent supply chain and engineering management. The course design targets supply chain and business management, providing comprehensive data analysis skills training in areas such as business processes, information flow, organizational structure, logistics systems, supply chain, and operations management. The &#34;broad first, then refined&#34; design of the JS3237 combination course includes the highest weight DSE subjects such as English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting and Financial Introduction, and Information and Communication Technology. In the first year, students take common courses from the Faculty of Engineering, and in the second year, they focus on the foundational knowledge of intelligent supply chains and engineering management, ensuring that students possess both design thinking and computational thinking abilities. Visit International Logistics Center to Broaden Horizons
In addition to classroom learning, the department also emphasizes rich and diverse experiential learning opportunities, encouraging students to broaden their horizons. Rainbow has participated in many professional competitions with classmates over the past few years, such as the International Logistics Case Competition and workshops organized annually by the Hong Kong Logistics Association. She also mentioned that previous senior students who went to Thailand for competitions visited several famous logistics facilities, including Thailand's airport terminal, container terminal port facilities, Lazada's sorting center under Alibaba, and CTI Logistics' cold storage warehouse, which greatly broadened their perspectives. The senior students even teamed up with other participants from Thailand, Singapore, and other places to compete, providing supply chain optimization suggestions for businesses. Rainbow believes that through these overseas exchange programs, students have the opportunity to step out of the campus to explore different cultures, and through interactions with international students, not only broaden their horizons but also enhance their language skills and cross-cultural communication abilities!
Alumni Network and Career Development Support
A strong alumni network also provides unique resources for students in this program. During the annual alumni sharing sessions, alumni from various industries analyze industry trends and practical experiences, and even provide career advice and guidance, bringing internship and job opportunities. In addition, regular collaborations with different professional organizations and associations are held to organize various seminars, or through different online resource platforms, to provide in-depth introductions to the employment prospects and development opportunities in the industry.
