Chinese startup Momenta partners with Uber to launch robotaxi service in global markets

Image credit: CnEVPost) Chinese autonomous driving startup Momenta has entered into a robotaxi partnership with Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER), becoming another partner of the US ride-sharing giant after WeRide. Momenta announced on May 3 that it has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Uber to bring self-driving vehicles to the Uber platform to cover international markets outside of the US and China. The partnership between the two companies will first kick off in Europe in 2026, when they will offer robotaxi services with in-car safety officers. Momenta already has solid partnerships with the world's leading chip platforms and car companies, and the partnership with Uber completes a key piece of the company's puzzle to enable autonomous driving at global scale, said Cao Xudong, CEO of the Chinese startup. Momenta will continue to drive the commercialization of self-driving robotaxi with Uber to bring a safer travel experience to users worldwide, the company said. It is the second Chinese autonomous driving startup after WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD) to enter into a partnership with Uber about robotaxi. In September 2024, WeRide announced a strategic partnership with Uber to advance the use of its self-driving vehicles on Uber's platform. In December 2024, WeRide and Uber began public operations of robotaxi in Abu Dhabi, with a fleet size that is set to reach 50 units by mid-2025. In April of this year, WeRide and Uber expanded their partnership to Dubai. Earlier today, WeRide announced that it has expanded its strategic partnership with Uber to include self-driving robotaxi services to 15 additional cities around the world, including international markets in regions such as Europe and the Middle East.
