The Mexican government is suing Google Maps for labeling the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of the United States
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on the 9th that the Mexican government has filed a lawsuit against the tech giant Google for labeling the entire Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America" in its digital maps. Sheinbaum emphasized at a press conference that the Mexican government demands Google to strictly adhere to the naming approved by the U.S. government, which grants the U.S. the right to name the continental shelf waters as the "Gulf of America," but the waters that are sovereign to Mexico and Cuba should be named the Gulf of Mexico, and the U.S. has no right to rename it. The Mexican government believes that Google has unilaterally expanded the labeling scope, openly disregarding international law and the bilateral treaties between the U.S. and Mexico
