According to informed sources, Tesla (TSLA.US) plans to open its first showrooms in India in July, officially entering the world's third-largest automotive market. As sales decline in Europe and China, the company led by Musk is seeking new growth points.
Sources indicate that the first models to arrive in India are the rear-wheel-drive version of the Model Y SUV exported from its factory in China. According to documents, this model is currently the best-selling electric vehicle globally.
Relevant parties revealed that Tesla will open its first showroom in Mumbai as early as mid-July, followed by a second one in New Delhi. Documents show that the company has imported supercharger components, automotive parts, merchandise, and spare parts from the United States, China, and the Netherlands.
This entry into India will end Tesla's years of repeated negotiations for market access. Although Musk has long been optimistic about this market, the company has not been able to establish a presence due to tariff disputes and local manufacturing requirements. After Musk met with Indian Prime Minister Modi in the United States in February, both sides finally made breakthrough progress.
Reports in February indicated that Tesla planned to ship thousands of cars to a port near Mumbai.
Tesla's spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding the preparations for the opening of the showroom in India.
Premium Pricing Concerns
According to customs documents, five Model Y vehicles produced at the Shanghai factory have already arrived in Mumbai. The declared price is 2.77 million rupees (31,988 USD), with over 2.1 million rupees paid in import duties—consistent with India's policy of imposing a 70% tariff plus additional fees on imported vehicles priced below 40,000 USD.
Informed sources say that the pre-tax price of this model is expected to exceed 56,000 USD (excluding insurance), but the final pricing will depend on Tesla's profit margins and market positioning strategy. In comparison, the same model is priced at 44,990 USD in U.S. showrooms, and after tax credits, it costs only 37,490 USD.
This premium pricing strategy could become a major obstacle for Tesla's plans in India. In this price-sensitive market, electric vehicles account for only 5% of total passenger car sales, while the luxury car market share is less than 2% (according to Indian government vehicle registration data). Tesla needs to convince budget-conscious Indian consumers to pay for high-end electric vehicles.
Team Expansion
After the departure of India head Prashanth Menon, Tesla has not appointed a new leader, but informed sources indicate that the company is accelerating the expansion of its charging network, retail, and policy teams.
The import of the Model Y represents Tesla's trial move, as the company plans to gradually expand its operations in India, including introducing more models. Informed sources say that the company has leased a warehouse in Karnataka in southern India and will add storage facilities in Gurugram, a satellite city of New Delhi.
To attract high-end customers, Tesla has chosen prime business districts for its showrooms in Mumbai and New Delhi. It is reported that Tesla executives from other countries are visiting India weekly to oversee the preparations
