The competition for self-driving taxis intensifies as Waymo expands its service area in Austin, Texas
Waymo, the autonomous driving division of Alphabet (GOOG.US), announced on Thursday that it will expand its service area in Austin, Texas, from the previous 37 square miles to 90 square miles to defend its leading position in the city.
Waymo stated that it currently has over 100 autonomous vehicles on the Uber platform in Austin, covering new communities such as Crestview, Windsor Park, Sunset Valley, and Franklin Park.
The company has approximately 1,500 autonomous vehicles in San Francisco, other cities in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Atlanta
