Amazon AWS reportedly lays off hundreds in its cloud computing division

An Amazon (AMZN.US) spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that the company's Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing division laid off employees on Thursday.

In a statement via email, the spokesperson mentioned that difficult business decisions were made, resulting in the reduction of certain positions within specific AWS teams. The company will continue to invest, hire, and optimize resources to provide innovation for customers.

Several employees from the cloud computing division reported to the media that they received emails on Thursday morning informing them of their termination, and their computers would be disabled. According to two informed sources, at least several hundred people were laid off, but Amazon declined to provide a more precise number. Amazon stated that multiple departments within AWS were also involved in Thursday's layoffs
