According to a report by Reuters on August 15, India celebrated its 78th Independence Day on the 15th, with Prime Minister Modi calling for the nation to rely more on itself to manufacture various products from fertilizers to jet engines during the celebration ceremony in New Delhi, and vowed to protect farmers' interests. Due to the high tariffs imposed by U.S. President Trump on Indian goods exported to the U.S., which are expected to drag down India's economic growth, Modi announced a reduction in the Goods and Services Tax starting in October—this move is expected to boost consumption. New Delhi has been struggling to cope with Trump's tariff policies and the breakdown of trade negotiations, largely stemming from disagreements over the import of U.S. agricultural products and dairy. The report stated that Modi delivered his annual speech from the walls of the Red Fort as is customary. He said, "Farmers, fishermen, and cattle breeders are our top priority." He added, "For any policy that threatens their interests, Modi will resist like a wall. India will never compromise on protecting the interests of our farmers." In this nearly two-hour speech, Modi did not mention the tariff issue or the United States. He stated, "At this moment, we must be determined to build a strong India... I hope our traders and shopkeepers can showcase rows of 'Made in India' products." Modi indicated that Indian-made semiconductor chips will be launched by the end of this year, and that India is committed to achieving self-sufficiency in critical minerals, with exploration work already underway at over 1,200 locations
