According to reports, Microsoft (MSFT.US) seems to be preparing to replace some of OpenAI's technology in its Office 365 applications with some of Anthropic's artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This would break OpenAI's monopoly within Microsoft since the tech giant invested billions of dollars in OpenAI in January 2023. Previously, OpenAI's technology had been used for the development of new features in Microsoft's productivity software suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Anthropic's technology is supported by companies such as Amazon (AMZN.US) and Google (GOOGL.US). Reports indicate that as part of the agreement, Microsoft will pay fees to Amazon AWS to use Anthropic's models. AWS is the exclusive provider of Anthropic models.
Currently, Microsoft Azure and AWS are the two largest cloud computing service providers in the world, followed by Google's Cloud Platform. In the field of generative AI chatbots, OpenAI's ChatGPT competes with Anthropic's Claude.
Microsoft has been negotiating with OpenAI for months regarding OpenAI's plan to restructure its profit-making division. It is unclear whether Microsoft's shift is a negotiation strategy, but sources added that Microsoft executives have also found that Anthropic's models perform better in Office AI functionalities. For example, Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 4 performs better in generating PowerPoint presentations.
Microsoft's AI tool pricing is expected to remain unchanged at $30 per user per month. OpenAI is still expected to support Microsoft's Copilot generative AI applications
