According to informed sources, OpenAI and NVIDIA (NVDA.US) CEOs plan to commit to supporting billions of dollars in UK data center investments during their visit to the UK next week with U.S. President Trump.
The sources indicated that the two companies are collaborating with London-based data center firm Nscale Global Holdings Ltd. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang are expected members of the U.S. executive delegation visiting the UK. According to the sources, as part of the plan, OpenAI is expected to invest billions of dollars. They also stated that U.S. companies are expected to announce a total investment of hundreds of billions of dollars in the UK during Trump's visit next week.
Political and business leaders across Europe have been calling for increased investment in facilities supporting generative artificial intelligence (AI). In January of this year, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a plan aimed at &#34;accelerating AI&#34; through investments in data centers and chips. He also called for the creation of &#34;AI growth zones&#34; to allow data centers to gain fast-track approvals and access to the power grid.
As the developer of ChatGPT, OpenAI is seeking to expand its business operations in Europe, where it faces stricter regulations and stronger skepticism towards Silicon Valley tech. In May of this year, OpenAI announced the &#34;OpenAI for Countries&#34; initiative, aiming to expand its flagship Stargate data center project overseas. In July, OpenAI stated that it would become the main customer of a new data center in Norway, built by Nscale and funded by Norwegian investment company Aker ASA.
Nscale was established in May 2024 and had previously committed to investing $2.5 billion in the UK data center industry over three years, including the purchase of land in Loughton, Essex. In January of this year, Nscale announced that the Loughton facility could accommodate up to 45,000 NVIDIA GB200 superchips designed for AI. In April, reports indicated that Nscale was seeking to raise $2.7 billion to build AI infrastructure based on an upcoming partnership with ByteDance.
OpenAI's investment scale in Europe pales in comparison to other regions. For example, the company committed to providing 5 gigawatts of capacity for its first international branch in the United Arab Emirates. Earlier reports indicated that the Stargate project in the U.S. aims for a capacity of 4.5 gigawatts. To this end, OpenAI and its partners, including SoftBank Group and Oracle, have committed to investing up to $500 billion
