Tesla is under investigation by the NHTSA due to issues with door handles

Tesla is under investigation by U.S. automotive safety regulators due to issues with the door handles on certain Model Y vehicles, which could potentially trap occupants inside the car. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Tuesday that it has initiated a so-called "preliminary assessment" regarding this issue. In this case, the electronic door handles may lose power and become inoperable. The investigation involves certain 2021 Model Y vehicles. Notably, reports of this issue surfaced just days ago, revealing a series of incidents where individuals were unable to open the doors after power loss, particularly following accidents, leading to injuries and even fatalities. NHTSA stated, "The focus of this investigation is on the operability of the electronic door locks from outside the vehicle, as there is no manual way to open the doors in such situations. The agency will continue to monitor related reports of being trapped due to the inability to open doors from inside the vehicle, and the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) will take further action if necessary."
