Meta launches AI short video stream "Vibes" encounters cold reception, users complain about "AI dross" intensifying commercialization concerns

According to Zhitong Finance APP, recently, Meta (META.US) launched a new content stream called "Vibes," which is embedded in the Meta AI application and the meta.ai platform. This feature focuses on the creation and sharing of AI-generated short videos and can be understood as a variant of TikTok or Instagram Reels. However, user feedback after its release did not meet expectations, with users claiming that every video they encountered was essentially "AI-generated slop." Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of Vibes in a post on Instagram, which included a series of AI-generated video examples: a group of fluffy creatures jumping between fluffy cubes; a cat kneading dough; and an ancient Egyptian woman taking a selfie on a balcony with a backdrop of ancient Egyptian scenery. According to Meta, when users browse the new content stream, they will see AI videos generated by creators and other users. Over time, Meta's algorithm will gradually push personalized content. Users can generate videos from scratch or remix existing videos in the content stream. Before publishing, users can add new visual elements, overlay music, and adjust styles. Once completed, they can directly publish to the Vibes stream, share via private messages, or cross-post to Instagram and Facebook's Stories and Reels features. Meta's Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang revealed in the post that while the company continues to develop its own AI models, the initial version of Vibes has already partnered with AI image generation tools Midjourney and Black Forest Labs. However, this new content stream may struggle to gain user acceptance, as its displayed AI features have sparked widespread negative comments from users, intensifying market doubts about whether its AI strategy can gain user recognition and achieve commercial value. This is especially true as the rise of AI technology has led to social media platforms being flooded with "AI-generated slop." This issue has spread globally, with platforms like YouTube also taking steps to address it. Even more perplexing is that earlier this year, Meta stated it would crack down on "non-original" content on Facebook and suggested creators focus on "authentic storytelling" rather than producing worthless short videos, a move that now clearly contradicts that stance. The launch of Vibes comes at a time when Meta is heavily investing in restructuring its AI business due to concerns about falling behind competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind in the AI field. In June of this year, following the departure of several core employees, Meta reorganized its AI business and established a dedicated department called "Meta Superintelligence Labs." Reports indicate that this department was subsequently further divided into four teams, focusing on foundational models, research, product integration, and infrastructure, highlighting its commitment to the AI sector
