Spanish Finance Minister: Spain has complied with NATO's defense spending requirements

On October 10 local time, in response to U.S. President Trump's remarks about "considering expelling Spain from NATO," Spanish Finance Minister María Jesús Montero stated that NATO can prove that Spain has complied with the defense spending commitments required by NATO, and that Spain, as a NATO member, has equal rights with the United States. Montero also indicated that Spain's defense spending cannot compete with basic public service expenditures, and therefore the Spanish government believes that a defense spending of 2% of GDP is reasonable, which is the amount the Spanish government has committed to NATO
