Meta is building a GW-level data center in El Paso, Texas, to drive its artificial intelligence (AI) development. This is one of a series of significant investments the company is making to maintain its leading position in the competitive AI industry.
In a blog post on Wednesday, Meta announced it will invest over $1.5 billion to construct the facility in El Paso, Texas. The data center will ultimately have a capacity of 1GW (gigawatt) to provide computing power support for high-end computing chips related to AI projects. A company spokesperson stated that the project is expected to be operational by 2028.
Meta is making substantial investments in AI infrastructure and talent, competing with rivals such as OpenAI and Alphabet, Google's parent company:

Artificial intelligence has become a core development direction for Meta. This technology not only drives the company's chatbots but also supports the algorithms of Instagram and Facebook, recommending videos and advertisements to users. Zuckerberg stated that personal AI assistants will become one of the most important and valuable services in history.
Meta's capital expenditures this year are expected to reach up to $72 billion, including AI infrastructure projects. Zuckerberg defended the aggressive investments, stating that in the AI field, it is better to invest more than less. He previously mentioned in a media interview:
