AMD collaborates with the U.S. Department of Energy to invest $1 billion in the construction of two supercomputers

These two computers will be equipped with the company's artificial intelligence chips to assist in seeking technological breakthroughs in the fields of energy and scientific research. In a statement released on Monday, AMD announced that the two supercomputers, named "Lux" and "Discovery," will have a total public-private investment of $1 billion. In addition to AMD, partners involved in the development of the new supercomputers at the Oak Ridge Laboratory include Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE.US) and the cloud infrastructure division of Oracle Corporation (ORCL.US). AMD CEO Lisa Su stated at the project launch ceremony in Washington, "This collaboration should serve as a model for American innovation, achieving synergy between government, academia, and industry." Stephen Streiffer, director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, revealed that one of the uses of the supercomputers will be for nuclear reactor modeling. He added that artificial intelligence technology is expected to accelerate the approval process for nuclear reactors. Additionally, the supercomputers can be used to promote the development of fusion energy and quantum computing technology, as well as to simulate the impact of diseases on human biological systems. This collaboration aims to implement the vision outlined in the AI Action Plan released by the Trump administration in July, regarding federal government support for scientific research. Su noted that President Donald Trump hopes for the U.S. to maintain a leading position in the field of artificial intelligence, and this vision provides momentum for related projects at Oak Ridge. Su pointed out that "Lux" and "Discovery" will become one of the most energy-efficient computing platforms globally, providing researchers across the U.S. with artificial intelligence data-sharing capabilities while supporting the training and testing of AI models. Regarding the two supercomputers, Su stated, "They carry an important mission—dedicated to scientific discovery, open collaboration, and maintaining the U.S. leading position in future critical technology fields." Chris Wright, U.S. Secretary of Energy, who attended the launch ceremony with Su, expressed his expectation that the government and commercial enterprises will conduct more joint research in the field of artificial intelligence in the future. Wright told reporters, "We will establish partnerships with dozens of companies to drive the efficient construction of related facilities at the pace of commercial enterprises."
