The Director of the Transport and Logistics Bureau, Chen Meibao, met with the Chairman of the International Marine Insurance Alliance, Frederic Denefle, and the Secretary-General, Lars Lange, on Tuesday (18th). Chen Meibao welcomed the leaders of the international marine insurance industry to Hong Kong.

She stated that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government places great importance on maintaining close ties with the global shipping industry and actively participates in meetings and exchange activities of the International Marine Insurance Alliance to keep abreast of the latest developments in the global shipping and marine insurance sectors. The International Marine Insurance Alliance has been committed to promoting the professional development and international standards of the global marine insurance industry for many years and has maintained good cooperation with the Hong Kong industry. In 2016, the International Marine Insurance Alliance established its first Asia-Pacific regional center in Hong Kong to enhance support for marine insurance in the Asia region.

She continued by expressing her pleasure that following the official establishment of the Hong Kong Shipowners Mutual Insurance Association on Monday (17th) at the 2025 World Shipping Congress Government Summit, the Hong Kong Marine Port Development Council and the International Marine Insurance Alliance signed a memorandum of cooperation on Tuesday during an event co-organized by the International Marine Insurance Alliance and the Hong Kong Insurance Industry Association, focusing on training talent in the marine insurance industry.

Chen Meibao indicated that this move would help strengthen the industry's alignment with international standards, further enhance Hong Kong's international status in the high-value-added maritime services sector, and promote the development of high-value-added maritime professional training. Additionally, the "Maritime Talent Training Subsidy Scheme - Marine Insurance" under the Maritime and Air Transport Talent Training Fund was also launched to encourage insurance companies and insurance brokerage firms engaged in marine insurance to provide internship opportunities for those aspiring to enter the marine insurance field.

She pointed out that among the 12 member associations of the International Association of Marine Underwriters, 11 provide services in Hong Kong, which demonstrates the thriving and internationalized development of marine insurance in Hong Kong. With advantages such as "one country, two systems," bilingual common law, a free economic environment, and a simple low tax system, Hong Kong has become an ideal city for global shipping service companies to establish business bases, providing high-quality marine services to global shipping enterprises. The Special Administrative Region government will further promote the development of high-value-added marine services, aiming to make Hong Kong a leading international shipping center
