Trump: Walsh and Hassett are the top candidates for the next Federal Reserve Chair, hoping for interest rates to drop to at least 1% in a year
U.S. President Trump told The Wall Street Journal that he is inclined to choose between Federal Reserve Board Governor Kevin Warsh and National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett for the position of Federal Reserve Chairman next year.
It is reported that the White House held a 45-minute meeting with Warsh last week, during which Trump questioned whether he could trust Warsh to support interest rate cuts once he leads the Federal Reserve. Trump confirmed this report in an interview, stating that Warsh and other candidates believe that interest rates must be lowered and that the next Federal Reserve Chairman should seek his opinion on the level of interest rates.
Trump expressed hope that interest rates should be reduced to 1% or even lower within a year, believing that rate cuts would help the U.S. Treasury lower the cost of financing government debt
