According to a report by Reuters, the European Commission is expected to propose tomorrow (16th) a relaxation of the regulations banning the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. The news suggests that the ban may be postponed by five years or even permanently relaxed.

The leader of the largest party in the European Parliament stated that the European Commission will announce clear recommendations for the cancellation of the internal combustion engine ban, calling the ban a serious policy mistake for the industry. Environmental groups argue that the EU should maintain the 2035 ban on sales, citing a shortage of biofuel supply and that it does not achieve carbon net-zero emissions.

The report indicates that the EU will unveil detailed plans to boost the proportion of electric vehicles in corporate fleets, which account for about 60% of new car sales in Europe. The automotive industry is calling for subsidies rather than mandatory targets. Additionally, the EU may propose a new category for small electric vehicles to enjoy lower tax incentives and obtain additional emission quotas
