How 1990s Hong Kong sex symbol Veronica Yip turned soft-core infamy into mainstream fame

This is the 66th instalment in a biweekly series profiling major Hong Kong pop culture figures of recent decades.\nFew narratives in Hong Kong entertainment are as compelling as that of former erotic film icon Veronica Yip Yuk-hing.\nHer arc – from beauty pageant contestant to soft-core sensation, mainstream pop singer, respected actress and finally the wife of a tycoon – is more than just a chronicle of survival. It is the story of a trailblazing career strategist who carved out a place for herself in Hong Kong’s conservative society on her own terms.\nBorn into a wealthy family in 1967, Yip began her public life with conventional glamour. Crowned second runner-up at the inaugural Miss Asia Pageant in 1985, she followed the typical path for beauty queens and signed an acting contract with a local broadcaster, in this case Asia Television (ATV).\n\nSuccess, however, remained elusive. While Yip secured lead roles in several dramas, ATV’s perpetually low ratings meant she struggled to become a household name. Frustrated, the actress made a bold pivot after her ATV contract ended, posing topless for the cover of a tabloid magazine in 1991.\n“I had been in showbiz for six years when that magazine cover happened. It was not a short time, and I really had not achieved much at ATV,” Yip told Carol “Do Do” Cheng Yu-ling in a TVB interview the following year.\n“If you ask how long I had taken to make the decision [to start undressing for the cameras], I’d say more than a year. It took me a long time to think and struggle through it. But the cover shoot was just a sudden opportunity that served as the trigger … when I was approached to do the sexy cover shoot, it only took me a few minutes to decide.”\nHer gamble paid off. The magazine sold out immediately, thrusting Yip into the spotlight.\nSeizing the momentum of her new-found fame, Yip went on to star in a trilogy of Category III (adults-only) erotic films: Take Me, Hidden Desire and Pretty Woman.\n\nAll released in 1991, the three films grossed more than HK$30 million combined – unprecedented figures for the genre at the time.\n“You just shouldn’t think too much about it,” Yip reflected on her filming experience in a Cable TV interview in 2012. “If you keep thinking that it’s very dirty work, then of course [you’d find it difficult]. And after all, it’s not porn we’re making; we’re making movies for the big screen.”\nJust as quickly as she had scandalised the city, she executed her second strategic move: announcing her retirement from Category III films.\nLeveraging her massive visibility, she signed a contract with TVB, Hong Kong’s dominant broadcaster, and simultaneously launched a music career, marking her entry into mainstream entertainment.\n\nThis transition was bolstered by family connections; Yip signed her record deal with Fitto Records, a company founded and run by her elder brother, the entertainment mogul Yip Chi-ming.\nHer first music single, 1992’s “Unstoppable Allure”, captivated the public with its flirtatious lyrics and alluring delivery. It was followed by a lyrical ballad that showcased a sensitive, vulnerable side to the entertainer.\nBacked by an extensive advertising campaign funded by Fitto Records – including a half-hour infomercial aired on TVB – her debut album, titled Unstoppable Allure after her hit song, broke the double-platinum sales mark within weeks.\nBy the end of 1992, Yip had released a second album, All For You, which featured a more wholesome image. With this, she shed the overtly sexual overtones of her past and signalled her arrival as a credible pop artist.\n\nDespite the lingering controversy surrounding her film work, her music’s popularity swept her up the charts, earning her best newcomer awards at several Hong Kong music ceremonies by the year’s end.\nTelevision played a crucial role in this reinvention. Rather than starring in TVB dramas, Yip was strategically deployed in variety shows, sketch comedies and talk shows. She became a fixture on flagship programmes like the broadcaster’s anniversary galas and charity fundraising shows.\nThis exposure allowed her to enter Hong Kong living rooms as a person rather than a pin-up. Whether performing impromptu comedy skits or conducting interviews with Cantopop legends like Anita Mui Yim-fong, she proved herself to be not just a sex symbol but also fun-loving and intelligent.\nSimultaneously, Yip gained traction in mainstream cinema. She starred in Call Girl 92 alongside established actresses like Sharla Cheung Man and Cecilia Yip Tung, and later played the love interest of superstar Leon Lai Ming in the romantic thriller Run (1994).\n\nPerhaps her most acclaimed role came in the romantic comedy A Roof with a View (1993), where she starred opposite Tony Leung Ka-fai as a naive single mother. Yip received a best actress nomination for the performance at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan.\nShe received another Golden Horse best actress nod a year later for Stanley Kwan Kam-pang’s Red Rose White Rose, in which she starred opposite Joan Chen and Winston Chao Wen-hsuan.\nHaving rehabilitated her image and cemented her status as a top-tier actress, she made a final, decisive move. In 1996, she announced her retirement from the entertainment industry to marry Chinese-American tycoon Jeffrey Wu, whom she had met earlier that year.\nRelocating to New York, Yip settled into family life on Long Island, where she raised a daughter and two sons while helping Wu oversee his business empire. This included the Hong Kong Supermarket chain in the US, as well as strategic investments in aviation, real estate and banking.\n\nAfter more than a decade of domesticity, the former actress made a brief, nostalgic return to Hong Kong for a cameo in the star-studded Lunar New Year comedy I Love Hong Kong 2013.\n“I came back in order to take a break – not physically, but mentally – so that I can momentarily leave my children behind and return to focus on doing what I liked to do before,” Yip explained at the time.\n“When I retired, it wasn’t because I didn’t like my job, but rather that it was too intense. I didn’t even have time to sleep – and sleep was all I wanted to do.”\nAlthough she stated her trip was primarily to visit her ailing mother, who died later that year, Yip’s reappearance revived the media scrutiny she had left behind. Tabloids swiftly circulated rumours that her return was financially motivated, alleging unspecified troubles at her family’s bank.\n\nTo protect her husband’s reputation, Yip held a press conference to categorically deny the rumours, presenting a poised and forceful defence.\nThe incident extinguished hopes of a comeback. Faced with residual media scepticism and, more crucially, strong family opposition, Yip reaffirmed her retirement.\nHer narrative faced another challenge in 2020. During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Yip’s husband filed for personal bankruptcy, citing nearly US$50 million in debts. Court filings revealed that three of his property firms had sought administration.\nIt marked a sombre turn for Yip, adding yet another dramatic chapter to a life defined by high stakes and bold transformations.\nWant more articles like this?
