But the risk of stock picking is that you will likely buy under-performing companies. On the other hand, it reported a trailing twelve months loss, suggesting it isn't reliably profitable.  Other metrics might give us a better handle on how its value is changing over time.  </p><p> We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 7.6% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Entain will earn in the future (free analyst consensus estimates) </p> <h2>What About Dividends?</h2><p> It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock.  The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs.  Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock.  In the case of Entain, it has a TSR of -38% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned.  And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence! </p> <h2>A Different Perspective</h2><p> Entain shareholders are up 9.5% for the year (even including dividends).  But that return falls short of the market.    But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 5% per year, over five years.  So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around.        It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Entain better, we need to consider many other factors.
