Affordable Robot Dogs Start Entering China's Consumer Market

(Yicai) Dec. 25 -- Chinese robotics firms have begun launching consumer-grade robot dogs costing less than CNY10,000 (USD1,423). However, whether such products can truly integrate into households and achieve stable mass production remains crucial for long-term survival, according to industry insiders.Startup Vita Dynamics launched its first quadruped robot, the Big Head Bobo, at a price of CNY9,988 (USD1,421) on Dec. 23, securing over CNY10 million (USD1.4 million) in pre-orders on the first day. Shenzhen-based Dobot also started pre-sales for its Rover X1, priced at CNY7,499, on the same day.The Big Head Bobo can reportedly accompany users on outdoor walks, autonomously take pictures, perform light load transport, and interact with people through voice communication, while the Rover X1 can serve a variety of business-to-business groups in addition to consumers.Vita Dynamics will begin mass producing the Big Head Bobo in Dongguan next month, with user testing starting at the end of January, co-founder Zhao Zhelun told Yicai. Mass deliveries are expected to commence by March, Zhao noted."We estimate the breakeven point to be around 50,000 units," Zhao said. "Once sales reach this level, we will basically cover the costs of product development, engineering, and team labor."Achieving stable mass production and delivery remains a significant challenge for robot dog manufacturers, not only testing their product development capabilities but also requiring a systematic assessment of costs, supply chains, and the market development pace."There have been previous attempts to launch consumer-grade quadruped robots, but the commercialization path has never been smooth," a robotics product manager said to Yicai. "They either struggled with practical application scenarios or faced challenges in the delivery chain, making it difficult to ensure stability and consistency in mass production."Consumer-grade robots are still in the early stages of development, with research and development, molds, and supply chains costs not fully amortized yet, Zhao pointed out. In addition, if the delivery timeline is forced to extend, it will weaken users' willingness to buy, Zhao said."For startups, how to achieve scalable mass production in a controlled manner without sacrificing consumer experience will directly impact whether products can transition from launching to real households," Zhao stressed.Vita Dynamics will gradually increase the mass production scale of Big Head Bobo through pre-sales, public testing, and batch delivery, reducing quality and cost risks from a sudden increase in production quantity, Zhao pointed out.Editors: Tang Shihua, Martin Kadiev
