(Agence France-Presse San Francisco, 24th) American artificial intelligence (AI) chip giant Nvidia announced today that it has reached a licensing agreement with AI chip startup Groq and has recruited its senior executives, highlighting the tech giant's ongoing expansion of its technological landscape.
Groq stated that the departure of its senior executives is part of a non-exclusive technology licensing agreement reached with Nvidia, with both parties aiming to expand the accessibility of low-cost AI computing.
According to the agreement, Groq founder Jonathan Ross, president Sunny Madra, and other team members will join Nvidia to assist in the development and scaling of Groq's technology.
Nvidia dominates the AI training chip market, making it the highest-valued company globally, but it is facing increasingly fierce competition in the AI inference field, not only from traditional rivals like AMD attempting to challenge its position but also from startups like Groq specializing in &#34;inference.&#34;
AI inference refers to the process by which trained AI models generate responses through reasoning and prediction, such as how the chatbot ChatGPT answers user questions or how image recognition systems identify objects in photos.
Groq stated in a brief announcement that the company will continue to operate independently, with Simon Edwards serving as CEO.
Earlier, U.S. financial media CNBC reported that Nvidia agreed to acquire Groq for $20 billion (approximately NT$628.8 billion) in cash; however, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that Nvidia did not acquire Groq.
Reports indicate that this arrangement is similar to a so-called &#34;acquihire,&#34; a practice that has become increasingly common in Silicon Valley, where large tech companies poach key talent from small firms, leaving behind a scaled-down company entity.
For example, American tech giant Microsoft reached a licensing and talent integration agreement with AI startup Inflection AI in 2024, with Inflection AI co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and most team members joining Microsoft, while Inflection AI continues to operate as an independent company.
This move is primarily aimed at circumventing scrutiny from competition regulatory agencies, as regulators have become increasingly cautious about tech giants acquiring companies that could become their competitors in recent years.
In addition to Microsoft, Google has also taken similar actions, recruiting teams from AI startups like Character.AI in 2024.
Facebook's parent company Meta made a significant investment of $14.3 billion in Scale AI in 2025 and hired its CEO Alexandr Wang to lead a new &#34;superintelligence&#34; AI laboratory, which is considered one of the largest talent acquisition deals to date. (Translation: Liu Wenyu)
