Vietnam’s FPT makes first commercial chip delivery into Japan market

Vietnam-based technology corporation FPT has recently delivered the first batch of power management integrated circuit (PMIC) to a Japanese electronics company through Restar, a major Japan-based electronics and semiconductor distributor. The shipment marks an initial step in FPT’s Asia-Pacific semiconductor expansion and the first time a Vietnamese enterprise has brought a commercial chip product into Japan’s high-bar quality market, FPT said in a statement on Tuesday. Purpose-built for high-performance multi-function printers (MFP) used in office and enterprise environments, this shipment serves as an initial delivery under FPT Semiconductor’s agreement with Restar signed earlier this year, with Restar targeting distribution of 10 million made-by-FPT chips over the next three years across Asia-Pacific. It also comes as demand for power management semiconductors accelerates across consumer electronics, industrial equipment and automotive, with the global power management integrated circuit (IC) market projected to reach about $59 billion by 2030 and Japan projected at roughly $3 billion. To meet Japan’s stringent qualification requirements, FPT’s engineering teams refined the design and performance parameters over several months. The IC underwent comprehensive validation of electrical characteristics, stability, and load behavior, including reliability testing aligned with JEDEC standards. It was also verified on real devices to confirm compatibility and safe operation. In parallel, the product meets clean-material and environmentally responsible manufacturing expectations through chemical substance disclosure aligned with chemSHERPA, supporting end-to-end supply chain transparency. With the first delivery completed, FPT and Restar will continue coordinating subsequent deliveries while exploring additional semiconductor product lines based on Japan market demand, covering next-generation power IC, control IC, and microcircuits for office equipment, imaging systems, and consumer electronics. Beyond product delivery, this collaboration includes engineer exchanges and joint research and development (R&D) to deepen design capability, alongside a coordinated OSAT model spanning semiconductor packaging and testing, combining FPT’s chip design strengths with Restar’s supply chain scale and market access to support long-term, sustainable growth in the semiconductor business. “Shipping our first commercial chips to Japan marks a significant milestone for FPT and a clear signal of Vietnamese capability in core technologies,” said Tran Dang Hoa, FPT IS Chairman cum FPT Semiconductor Chairman, FPT Corporation. “We expect this first delivery to be followed by wider adoption of Vietnam-designed chips across office equipment, consumer electronics, IoT and industrial applications, strengthening Vietnam’s role in the global semiconductor value chain,” he added. As recent disruptions in the supply of mature-node components, such as the recent Nexperia disruption, have reinforced the need for diversification and additional reliable sources, FPT is expanding its discrete power device portfolio, including ESD and Zener diode protection components, to support customers seeking supplementary options in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. The tech firm is also building a broader power semiconductor ecosystem spanning PMIC, LDO, BUCK, LED Driver and Power MOSFET product lines, designed to deliver stable power with lower energy consumption for electronic devices. Across these applications, made-by-FPT chips help regulate and stabilize internal power, protect components from voltage and current fluctuations, and sustain reliable operation under high-load conditions, said the statement.
