On the first trading day of 2026, U.S. stocks fluctuated, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping as much as 210 points before ultimately closing up 319 points or 0.7%, at 48,382 points. The S&P 500 index rose by 12 points or 0.2%, closing at 6,858 points. The Nasdaq initially gained as much as 343 points or 1.5%, but later declined slightly, closing down 6 points at 23,235 points.

AI stocks rose, with Micron Technology (MU.US) surging 10.5%, NVIDIA (NVDA.US) closing up 1.3%, and AMD (AMD.US) also rising 4.4%.

Tesla (TSLA.US) reported a 16% drop in deliveries last quarter, falling short of expectations, and lost its position as the world's largest electric vehicle seller for the year, with its stock price closing down 2.6%.

Major tech stocks opened high but closed lower, with Amazon (AMZN.US) and Meta (META.US) both down over 1%, and Apple (AAPL.US) down 0.3%. Alphabet (GOOG.US) edged up 0.5%.

Chinese concept stocks performed well, with Baidu (BIDU.US) ADR shares rising 15%, as its subsidiary Kunlun Chip confirmed its spin-off listing; Alibaba (BABA.US) rose 6.3%. JD.com (JD.US) also increased by about 3%
