
The three major A-share indices of Shanghai and Shenzhen opened higher by 0.5% to 0.8%, with gold and chip stocks rising

The central parity rate of the RMB against the U.S. dollar was raised by 58 points to 7.0230 per U.S. dollar. The People's Bank of China today (5th) conducted a 135 billion RMB (same below) seven-day reverse repurchase operation in the open market, with the operation rate remaining at 1.4%. Today, 482.3 billion RMB of reverse repos are maturing, resulting in a net withdrawal of 468.8 billion RMB for the day.
On the first trading day of 2026, the three major A-share indices opened higher in the red. The Shanghai Composite Index opened at 3,986 points, up 18 points or 0.5%. The Shenzhen Component Index opened at 13,633 points, up 108 points or 0.8%. The ChiNext Index opened up 26 points or 0.8%, at 3,229 points.
In the banking sector, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (601398.SH) opened down 0.3%. China Construction Bank (601939.SH) opened up 0.1%. Additionally, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (300750.SZ) opened up 0.8%. BYD surpassed Tesla (TSLA.US) in sales last year to become the world's largest electric vehicle seller, with BYD (002594.SZ) opening up 0.7%.
International gold prices rose, and gold-related stocks opened higher, with Zijin Mining (601899.SH), Shandong Gold (600547.SH), Zhongjin Gold (600489.SH), and Chifeng Jilong Gold Mining (600988.SH) opening up 1.8%-3.2%.
Chip stocks rose, with SMIC receiving over 26.5 billion RMB from the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund for a stake of over 9%, and SMIC A (688981.SH) opened up 3.3%. Hua Hong Semiconductor (688347.SH) opened up 4.4%. Cambricon Technologies (688256.SH) opened up 1.4%
