(Agence France-Presse Washington, 19th) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) today raised its global economic growth forecast for this year to 3.3%, attributing it to investments in the technology sector. However, the IMF warned that if the productivity gains from artificial intelligence (AI) are reassessed or trade tensions resurface, it could disrupt economic trends.
In its latest &#34;World Economic Outlook&#34; report, the IMF estimates that the global economic growth rate will remain at 3.3%, the same as in 2025, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from its October forecast last year. The upward revision mainly comes from the United States and China.
IMF Chief Economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas stated at a press conference that despite the shocks from trade and tariff issues last year, the surge in AI and technology investments has helped overcome these challenges, making it seem that the global economy is &#34;shaking off&#34; these disruptions. According to the IMF, this is particularly true in North America and Asia.
Gourinchas pointed out that the growth rates of the United States and other advanced economies, which have seen a significant increase in AI technology investments, are diverging. The IMF now estimates that the U.S. economy will grow by 2.4% this year, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the October forecast; the Eurozone is expected to grow by only 1.3%, while Japan's economic growth rate will be even slower.
In emerging market countries, Gourinchas noted that the economic growth momentum in China and India is also &#34;relatively strong.&#34; The IMF also forecasts that the global inflation rate will decrease from 4.1% last year to 3.8% this year.
The IMF stated that countries have shown resilience in responding to trade shocks, and government fiscal and monetary support has also been helpful; however, the current uncertainty in trade policies is much higher than at the same time last year, and tensions may occasionally escalate in the future.
The IMF also reminded that the resilience shown by the global economy so far is largely driven by a few industries, indicating that vulnerabilities still exist.
Gourinchas said that in addition to trade risks, the AI boom driving global economic growth also carries dangers. If the expected productivity increases and profitability from AI do not materialize, a &#34;market correction&#34; may occur
