UAE artificial intelligence (AI) company G42 expects that a batch of the world's most advanced chips will arrive in the UAE in the coming months. Media analysis indicates that this will further enhance the company's significant position in the global technology sector.
G42 CEO Peng Xiao stated in an interview at Davos that the delivered chips will include products from NVIDIA, AMD, and the American startup Cerebras Systems.
The media reported that the Middle East is increasingly becoming a hub for technology companies, with enterprises including OpenAI and Microsoft ramping up their presence due to the region's ample capital and relatively low computing energy costs.
In November last year, the U.S. approved the sale of tens of thousands of advanced AI chips to G42 and Saudi Arabia's Humain. A few weeks later, the UAE signed the &#34;Pax Silica&#34; agreement with the U.S., committing to strengthen cooperation in the technology supply chain.
Peng Xiao stated that the first phase of the large data center project located in Abu Dhabi, with a computing power of 200 megawatts, is expected to officially launch &#34;in the coming months.&#34;
G42 plans to add 200 to 500 megawatts of computing power each quarter, expanding the park to a maximum scale of about 5 gigawatts in the coming years. This project is part of OpenAI's &#34;Stargate&#34; initiative for overseas expansion, aiming to build large-scale AI infrastructure outside the U.S.
In response to concerns that the global race to build data centers may lead to overcapacity, Peng Xiao believes this view is unfounded, especially regarding the computing power required to run AI models for users. He told the media:

G42 is chaired by UAE National Security Advisor Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan and plays a core role in the UAE's strategy to build a global AI powerhouse. The company has reached a $1.5 billion partnership with Microsoft and has co-founded the AI investment platform MGX with the sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company.
The media noted that while the UAE is ramping up its AI efforts, countries in the region such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are also rapidly expanding related investments. Peng Xiao downplayed external claims of competition, stating that this broader regional action reflects the genuine global demand for AI.
However, also at Davos, the CEO of the Qatar Investment Authority told the media that the fund will adopt a more cautious and selective investment strategy in the AI sector this year. Meanwhile, the CEO of Mubadala stated that the fund has &#34;very strong confidence&#34; in the AI industry.
