According to Bloomberg, South Korea's Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) is close to obtaining certification from Nvidia (NVDA.US) for its latest AI memory chip (called HBM4), a development that helps narrow the gap with competitor SK Hynix (000660.KS). Samsung Electronics' stock price opened high today (26th) but has since fallen, currently down 0.1%; SK Hynix is down 2.9%.

The report cites sources revealing that Samsung Electronics has entered the final certification stage with Nvidia, having provided initial samples to Nvidia last September. Nvidia uses a large amount of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to drive its AI accelerators.

Sources indicate that Samsung is preparing to begin mass production of HBM4 in February this year; the company will soon be ready to ship, but the specific timing has not been clarified.

In the AI memory sector, Samsung lags behind SK Hynix and Micron (MU.US), but as the AI boom has led to memory shortages across the electronics industry, the stock prices of these three companies have surged significantly in recent weeks. Since early September, the total market capitalization of these three leading memory chip manufacturers has increased by approximately $900 billion
