China's CATL to Boost Sodium-Ion Batteries Push, CTO Says

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) is set to promote sodium-ion batteries as a scalable alternative to lithium-ion batteries, according to CTO Gao Huan. While sodium-ion batteries offer advantages like better low-temperature performance and safety, they face challenges such as higher costs and lower energy density. CATL's sodium-ion brand, Naxtra, aims for cost-effectiveness and energy density parity with lithium-ion batteries within three years. The company plans to use sodium-ion batteries in various applications, with shipments expected to exceed 100 GWh by 2030. Morgan Stanley forecasts a significant cost reduction as supply chains improve.
