WattEV expands San Bernardino depot with megawatt charging

WattEV has expanded its electric truck charging depot in San Bernardino, California, increasing both power capacity and the number of charging points at what the company describes as its busiest site. The upgrade enables the depot to charge up to 200 battery-electric trucks per day and introduces megawatt charging for vehicles compatible with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard, bringing utilisation levels comparable to those of a conventional diesel truck stop.The depot now operates with a total installed charging capacity of 11.5 MW. As part of the expansion, WattEV has added 30 additional CCS connectors rated at 250 kW and six MCS connectors delivering up to 1.2 MW each, supplementing the site’s existing infrastructure. The company says the additional ports are intended to increase throughput while preparing the location for next-generation heavy-duty electric trucks.“WattEV’s vertically integrated approach is what truly sets us apart in the charging and fleet electrification sector,” said CEO Salim Youssefzadeh. “That model is now driving measurable results. At our San Bernardino depot, strong and sustained utilisation – currently averaging approximately 700 MWh per month – has created the need to more than double the site’s capacity.”Located adjacent to Interstate 215, the San Bernardino depot sits on one of Southern California’s most heavily used freight corridors, linking the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles with Inland Empire distribution centres. WattEV positions the site as a central node for regional and drayage operations transitioning to zero-emission transport.“With the expansion, we’ve added 30 additional CCS connectors and six MCS connectors, significantly increasing throughput and future-proofing the site for next-generation electric trucks,” Youssefzadeh said. “San Bernardino sits at the centre of some of the most freight-dense corridors in the country, and scaling this depot enables us to support real-world fleet growth with reliable charging, dependable operations, and infrastructure designed for long-term, commercial deployment.”WattEV aims to deploy 12,000 electric heavy-duty trucks in California by 2030. It justrecently ordered 40 all-electric Tesla Semi. The company currently operates five charging depots and has 15 more under development, targeting 100 operational sites by 2035. The San Bernardino facility forms part of a growing West Coast network extending from the Port of Long Beach through to Bakersfield.
