The Director of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, Qiu Yinghua, stated during the opening ceremony of the "Dragon Dance Kwun Tong Lunar New Year Night Market 2026" on Monday (9th) that in recent years, the "Dragon Dance Night Market" in Kwun Tong has been very popular among citizens. Looking back over the past two years, the organizers not only held the Lunar New Year Night Market but also hosted a Midsummer Night Market in the summer, attracting nearly 1.3 million visitors across the three night markets, generating approximately HKD 19 million in revenue.
Qiu Yinghua indicated that according to the latest statistical data, the total sales value of the retail industry in December increased by 6.6% year-on-year, marking an increase for eight consecutive months, with the total for the year 2025 also growing to over HKD 380 billion. This reflects a gradual stabilization of local consumer sentiment, with the purchasing power of both tourists and citizens continuing to improve. Events like the "Dragon Dance Kwun Tong Night Market," which combine food, retail, and community characteristics, are providing citizens with more diverse consumption choices and creating real business opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises and local merchants, successfully bringing the vitality of overall economic recovery into the community.
He further mentioned that this year's Lunar New Year Night Market has received support from the Hong Kong Beijing Association and the Hong Kong Cultural, Sports and Tourism Exchange Association, with more diverse activities than in previous years. Whether it is unique delicacies from various regions, creative products, or seasonal flower zones, everything is quite attractive; there are also multiple children's games; and he emphasized that the government has been committed to promoting the diversified development of the local economy by optimizing the business environment and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, encouraging more activities that incorporate community characteristics
