Sun Yuhan: The minimum wage increase of 2.38% outpaces inflation
The government plans to raise the minimum wage from HKD 42.1 per hour to HKD 43.1, an increase of HKD 1 or 2.38%. It is expected to be implemented on May 1 after passing the Legislative Council. The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Sun Yuhan, stated that the increase in the minimum wage outpaces inflation, and if there is deflation or economic downturn in the future, the amount will be maintained and not reduced, thus ensuring that workers can cope with inflation.
He also mentioned that this year is significant as the minimum wage will be subject to an "annual review" starting this year, with adjustments made to the amount based on a formula every year
