
Hong Kong airport's passenger volume increased by 4.5% year-on-year last month
Hong Kong International Airport's passenger volume reached 5.51 million in January 2026, with aircraft movements totaling 34,445, representing year-on-year increases of 4.5% and 2.4%, respectively. The first month of 2026 saw steady growth in passenger volume, with transfer/transit passenger numbers recording double-digit growth compared to the same period last year. Notably, the number of travelers between Mainland China, Southeast Asia, and North America saw the most significant increase.
During the month, cargo volume grew by 5.4% year-on-year to 415,000 metric tons. All categories of cargo recorded growth, with transshipment cargo becoming the main driver of growth, rising by 18.2% year-on-year to 93,000 metric tons. Among major trading regions, cargo volume between Europe, Southeast Asia, and Mainland China saw the most significant increases.
In the past 12 months, the airport's passenger volume increased by 13% year-on-year to 61.21 million passengers; aircraft movements rose by 7.4% year-on-year to 395,510. Cargo volume increased by 2.8% year-on-year to 5.09 million metric tons.
Additionally, during the Lunar New Year holiday period, the Airport Authority anticipates that the total passenger volume on peak days will reach 210,000. The most popular destinations are Taipei, Bangkok, and Tokyo. The Airport Authority will increase staffing and maintain close cooperation with other airport operators to ensure smooth airport operations during the holiday period
