Xiaomi is accelerating its move into high-end technology fields, simultaneously advancing in two areas: self-developed chips and AI layout.
Xiaomi President Lu Weibing stated in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday that the company plans to upgrade its self-developed SoC chips annually and is preparing to launch an independent AI assistant for overseas markets. This statement marks a substantial step forward for Xiaomi on the path to core technology independence and indicates that its chip iteration pace will align with Apple.
Analysts believe that Xiaomi is attempting to build a differentiated competitive barrier, distinct from third-party solutions like Qualcomm and MediaTek, through the deep integration of chips, operating systems, and AI assistants, and is laying the AI ecological foundation in advance for its entry into the European electric vehicle market in 2027.
<h2>Annual Chip Upgrades: Ambition to Catch Up with Apple</h2>
Xiaomi launched its first self-developed SoC chip, the Xuanjie O1, last year, using advanced 3-nanometer process technology. During the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Lu Weibing told CNBC, &#34;This is our first chip product, and looking ahead, we should upgrade it once a year.&#34;
He revealed that the new generation of chips will first be equipped in devices released domestically this year, and will gradually extend to models sold in overseas markets.
Iterating a SoC annually is a significant engineering investment, and this pace aligns with Apple's usual practice of releasing new A-series chips each year. Currently, Apple has the A-series chips, Samsung has the Exynos brand, while most other smartphone manufacturers still rely on third-party SoC solutions provided by Qualcomm or MediaTek.
It is noteworthy that Xiaomi Vice President Xu Fei stated to CNBC last September that the company could not commit to releasing new chips every year. Lu Weibing's clear statement this time shows that confidence in the company's chip strategy has significantly increased internally.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced last year that the company would invest at least 50 billion yuan (approximately 6.9 billion USD) in self-developed chips over the next decade.
<h2>Integrated AI Hardware and Software: First Three-in-One Integration</h2>
The strategic value of self-developed SoCs lies not only in the chips themselves but also in their deep synergy with software. Lu Weibing stated, Xiaomi plans to integrate the Xuanjie O1 chip, HyperOS operating system, and AI assistant into the same device for the first time this year, &#34;which will first land in the Chinese market, but ultimately we hope to introduce it to overseas markets.&#34;
Xiaomi has developed its own mobile operating system, HyperOS, based on the Android system. In the domestic market, Xiaomi devices are equipped with the &#34;Xiao Ai&#34; AI assistant, with the underlying model developed by the company itself, primarily serving the domestic product ecosystem.
This close integration of chips and software is the core logic behind Apple's competitive barrier built over the years, and Xiaomi's move aims to replicate this path to achieve differentiation from competitor products.
<h2>Partnering with Google Gemini: International AI Assistant on the Agenda</h2>
As Xiaomi's electric vehicle plans are set to enter the European market in 2027, the company is simultaneously preparing an AI assistant for the international market. Lu Weibing stated, &#34;When our cars enter the international market, you will see our AI agents come along.&#34;
Regarding the selection of overseas AI assistant models, Lu Weibing stated that Xiaomi may seek to collaborate with Google to adopt its Gemini model, while also integrating its own models. This strategy is similar to that of Samsung—Samsung integrates multiple AI models in its devices while heavily relying on Google Gemini.
