Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) has high hopes for the R2 vehicle, aiming for customer deliveries by June or earlier. Here's a look at how its goals stack up against other electric vehicle launches.



<h2>Rivian's R2 Goals</h2>



Since its unveiling in March 2024, the R2 remains a key talking point for Rivian and a future stock catalyst. That catalyst is nearly here, with Rivian confirming after fourth-quarter results that customer deliveries would begin in the second quarter.



Rivian's guidance for 2026 deliveries is a range of 62,000 to 67,000 total vehicles. Of that total, the company expects to sell 20,000 to 25,000 R2 vehicles, according to TechCrunch.



Selling 20,000 R2 vehicles in six months could put the vehicle in select company and ahead of other highly anticipated launches, according to data compiled by TechCrunch.



Only the Model Y from Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has completed 20,000 or more deliveries in under six months, with the vehicle accomplishing the feat in four months back in 2020.



If Rivian is able to deliver 20,000 R2 vehicles in six months or less it would become the first vehicle since the Model Y and would tie for second place with the Honda Prologue, which accomplished the mark in six months time.



Hitting the milestone figure in six months would put the R2 ahead of the Chevrolet Equinox EV from General Motors Company (NYSE:GM), which needed eight months, and ahead of the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning from Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F), which hit the milestone in eight months and ten months respectively.



Six months to the milestone would also put the R2 ahead of the launch of the Model 3 from Tesla, which took 11 months to hit the milestone.



If Rivian hits its ambitious 20,000-delivery goal in six months, the result would be impressive. Most competing vehicles also offered consumers a $7,500 federal EV tax credit. That credit has since expired.



<h2>What's Next for Rivian</h2>



Rivian’s R2 is a big bet. The company is pausing plans for a new Georgia vehicle factory to update its existing Normal, Illinois factory to meet its goal of deliveries in 2026.



The company has invested heavily in retooling the Normal factory and has worked to save costs wherever possible to get the R2 to market. It is targeting an annual production of more than 100,000 units from the facility. The Georgia plant could begin construction this year and start production in 2028 with capacity for hundreds of thousands more vehicles.



With an estimated starting price of around $45,000, the R2 will be closer to the starting price of the Tesla Model Y ($41,360) and will come in significantly lower than the $76,990 starting price for the R1S from Rivian.



Rivian is set to unveil official pricing and the full R2 lineup in the coming days at SXSW, which begins on March 12.



Rivian reported 42,247 deliveries in 2025, down 18% year-over-year. With the R2 remaining on track for deliveries in the first half of 2026, Rivian's delivery total could look much different at the end of the year and investors will hope the share price looks different as well.



<h2>Rivian Stock Price Action</h2>



Rivian stock trades at $15.17 on Friday versus a 52-week trading range of $10.36 to $22.69. Optimism for the R2 and profitability has sent Rivian shares up 37% over the last 52 weeks, but they remain down 88% over the last five years.
