In February of this year, Disney sent a letter to ByteDance, accusing it of using Disney works without permission while training and developing the Seedance 2.0 model, and demanded that it cease the infringement.
Now, this copyright dispute is hindering ByteDance's plans to launch Seedance 2.0 in overseas markets.
According to a recent report by The Information, due to a series of copyright disputes with major Hollywood studios and streaming platforms, ByteDance has decided to suspend the overseas launch plans for its next-generation video generation model, Seedance 2.0.
In response, All Weather Technology sought confirmation from ByteDance regarding the authenticity of this news, but they declined to comment.
Seedance 2.0 was seen by the market as a &#34;weapon&#34; for ByteDance to compete head-on with leading video generation applications like Sora and Runway in overseas markets.
However, with the suspension of this launch plan, ByteDance may find itself at a disadvantage in the competition for overseas C-end users and B-end film production orders.
In fact, there has been considerable criticism regarding the copyright issues of ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 in the domestic market as well.
As early as when Seedance 2.0 began internal testing in the domestic market, well-known blogger Film Hurricane Tim discovered that by simply uploading a facial photo without providing any voice samples, Seedance 2.0 could directly use his original voice to speak and recreate the camera movements of the real scene outside the photo.
This sparked controversy over the compliance of the training material sources for ByteDance.
Subsequently, ByteDance urgently adjusted the functional strategy of Seedance 2.0, suspending support for users to upload real images or videos as reference subjects.
However, partial functional cuts cannot fundamentally eliminate the sword of Damocles hanging over AI-generated video models.
The setbacks of Seedance 2.0 overseas and the controversies domestically are not isolated cases, reflecting the copyright concerns that cannot be concealed behind the technological frenzy in the entire AI video generation sector.
As high-quality film-level materials become the training data for the next generation of large models, the tech giants' attempt to acquire training data at zero cost based solely on the logic of &#34;technological neutrality&#34; has indeed caused substantial harm to the core commercial value of many content creators.
How to establish a reasonable data usage and benefit distribution mechanism while pursuing technological advantages, and truly respect and feed back original copyrights, may be a problem that the AIGC industry needs to solve
