If only a limited number of participants can bring projects to life, then growth—even in a high-demand environment—can only scale so far. In practical terms, that means shifting focus from simply building more to enabling more builders. Based on what I’ve seen across infrastructure and energy markets, there are three areas where leaders can take a more deliberate approach.<h2>1. Identify The Hidden Barriers To Entry</h2>Barriers in complex industries are not always obvious. Beyond capital requirements, there are often less visible constraints:• Limited access to specialized knowledge• Fragmented or opaque deal structuring processes• Reliance on tightly held networks to source and execute opportunitiesIndividually, these challenges are manageable. Collectively, they can prevent otherwise viable projects—and capable participants—from ever reaching the starting line.Leaders who take the time to map these friction points within their ecosystems often uncover opportunities to unlock growth that aren’t immediately apparent.<h2>2. Shift From Output To Enablement</h2>A common instinct in high-growth sectors is to focus on scaling production. But in constrained environments, this approach can hit diminishing returns. In many cases, projects don’t fail due to lack of demand or capital, but because they aren’t structured in a way that aligns with investor expectations.Efforts to standardize and streamline these processes—whether through collaboration models, digital tools or new financing structures—can help bridge that gap and make participation more accessible to a broader set of stakeholders.<h2>Expanding Access May Be The Next Phase Of Growth</h2>The energy transition is often framed as a technological challenge. In reality, it may be just as much an access challenge.The technologies required to generate clean energy are advancing rapidly. Capital is increasingly available. The urgency is well understood.But the ultimate speed and scale of progress may depend on something more fundamental: how widely the ability to build is distributed. Because if history is any guide, industries don’t truly transform when technologies scale.
