According to TradingKey, citing previously disclosed information, the single-chip performance of AI5 rivals NVIDIA's Hopper architecture, while its dual-chip configuration approaches the Blackwell level, with significantly lower costs and power consumption compared to NVIDIA's equivalent products. Musk had previously stated that key performance indicators for AI5 will improve by approximately 40 times over AI4, including a ninefold increase in memory and an eightfold boost in computing power.
Musk also revealed that development of the next-generation AI6 chip and the Dojo 3 supercomputer processor is proceeding according to plan, extending Tesla's self-developed AI chip roadmap.
<h2>Tape-Out Complete, Mass Production to Start in 2027</h2>
According to Maeli Business Newspaper, tape-out is the final stage of chip design, signifying that the design blueprint has been formally submitted to the foundry and is ready to enter the manufacturing phase. Mass production of AI5 is expected to begin in 2027, approximately one year from now.
AI5 is positioned as the successor to AI4 and will serve as the core computing pillar for Tesla's autonomous driving system and humanoid robot program. According to TradingKey, AI5 is expected to become the optimal inference chip for models with parameter scales below 250 billion. Notably, while making progress on AI5 development, Tesla is also collaborating with Intel to advance the Terafab project, maintaining a multi-pronged layout in AI infrastructure construction.
According to TechPowerUp, the production tasks for the AI5 accelerator chips will be split between Samsung Electronics and TSMC, with manufacturing locations at Samsung's facility in Taylor, Texas, and TSMC's facility in Arizona. Both major foundries rely on domestic U.S. capacity.
