<div id="readability-page-1" class="page">Telecoms giant China Mobile International is planning another route to connect terrestrial cables in Central Asia with Hong Kong’s submarine network, aiming to enable more efficient data transmission between the “stan” countries and the rest of the world, a senior executive has said. Kevin Chan Kin-fan, the company’s head of carrier business, said the developing telecommunications sector in Central Asia presented significant opportunities. He added that his company was ready to support mainland Chinese firms entering the region by providing technical services. Chan expressed optimism about the region’s development ahead of Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s first official visit to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in early June. “As a landlocked region, Central Asian countries lack the physical conditions required for direct submarine cable connections. Hong Kong, however, possesses one of the world’s highest densities of submarine cable landing stations and international data exchange centres,” he said. Chan said China Mobile aimed to leverage this advantage to connect Central Asia’s terrestrial fibre-optic networks to Hong Kong. A route has already been in service for several years, linking Hong Kong, the mainland, Kazakhstan, Russia and Europe. The senior executive said the company was planning an additional route that would pass through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to connect with Hong Kong.  “The completed project will integrate existing terrestrial and submarine cable resources to build a multi-route, high-bandwidth and highly secure digital bridge linking Asia and Europe,” he said. “This will enable Central Asian data to reach major global economies via the shortest possible routes.” Chan also highlighted the region’s strong growth potential, citing rising demand for digitalisation driven by a young population. He said Hong Kong could play a significant role in supporting Central Asia, where 5G services were only rolled out in 2023. China Mobile has also pledged to work with Chinese enterprises to help them expand globally by offering one-stop solutions, including compliance and telecommunications services. Lee earlier highlighted Hong Kong’s role in helping mainland companies “go global”, with 30 mainland entrepreneurs making up half of his delegation. Chan acknowledged that some businesses might face challenges adapting to the different cultures, policies and regulations in Central Asia. He said he hoped the coming delegation would help facilitate smoother market entry. During the visit, representatives from China Mobile will sign a memorandum of understanding with QazPost-YTO, a joint venture between Kazakhstan’s national postal service and a mainland delivery company. Chan said the company would provide smart solutions to the joint venture, which in turn would offer logistics capabilities to support China Mobile’s infrastructure projects in the region. </div>
