Broadcom stock rose 0.6% after reports revealed a $42 billion loan deal to Anthropic for chip supply and computing power leasing. The agreement allows Broadcom to swap debt for shares, aligning with Nvidia's strategy. While boosting AI chip sales projections, the dual role of supplier and lender raises conflict-of-interest warnings in Anthropic's IPO filing. Analysts maintain a Strong Buy consensus on Broadcom with significant upside potential.

Broadcom stock (AVGO) ticked up 0.6% in early trading on Thursday, October 1, after a Reuters exclusive report revealed that Broadcom agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion. According to Anthropic's IPO filing, the loan will help Anthropic lease computing power and buy server hardware.

The loan facility could cover about one-third of Anthropic's $125.2 billion five-year plan to lease tensor processing unit (TPU) chips. Instead of just selling cloud access, the two companies agreed on a much bigger deal that combines supplying chips and lending money.

Loan Deal Allows Broadcom to Swap Loan Debt into Anthropic Shares

As part of the funding deal, Broadcom can pick a lending partner and swap the loan debt into Anthropic stock shares. Anthropic stated in its filing that it does not expect any debt notes to be sold before its planned public stock offering completes.

Analyst Jay Goldberg at Seaport Research noted that Broadcom is using its strong cash balance to boost chip sales, following a path set by rival Nvidia (NVDA). Anthropic plans to become Broadcom's top custom chip buyer in 2027 as Broadcom projects AI chip sales of $115 billion in Fiscal 2027 and $230 billion in Fiscal 2028.

Anthropic Warns of Potential Conflicts of Interest with Broadcom

In the IPO papers, Anthropic warned stock buyers that Broadcom's double role as both chip supplier and lender creates potential conflicts of interest. The AI lab noted that Broadcom's choices on hardware pricing and gear access could affect its ability to secure enough computing power.

Anthropic also put cash into a locked bank account for Broadcom's benefit in April 2026. The filing warns that any missed payments could force lease bills due right away, while stopping Anthropic from using the $42 billion loan money to pay those bills.

Broadcom Partnership Gives Anthropic Access to Google TPU Chip Networks

The loan deal strengthens an April 2026 deal between Anthropic, Broadcom, and Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL). This deal gives Anthropic access to big Google TPU chip networks starting in 2027. Broadcom helps design custom TPU chips with Google, making it a key gear partner alongside cloud sellers like Amazon.

Wall Street analysts point out that this back-and-forth spending shows how top tech firms fund each other's growth. Managing partner Robert Leitao at Rothschild & Co noted that current AI funding relies heavily on a small group of firms making enough sales to back these big loan deals.

Turning to the Street, Broadcom's stock (AVGO) carries a Strong Buy consensus based on 27 Buy and three Hold ratings assigned in the past three months. The average 12-month AVGO stock price target is $519.21, which implies 47.84% upside from the current price. (See AVGO stock forecast)
