After the popular chatbot ChatGPT started charging, OpenAI has embarked on a frenzy of monetization!
According to The Information, citing insider sources, based on OpenAI's current revenue growth rate, the company is expected to generate over $1 billion in revenue from selling AI software and computing power in the next 12 months, surpassing its previous revenue forecast to shareholders.
As early as the end of December last year, Reuters reported that insiders revealed that OpenAI's revenue is projected to reach $200 million in 2023 and $1 billion in 2024.
A $1 billion annual revenue also means that OpenAI will generate revenue of over $80 million per month. Earlier this year, when investors purchased shares from existing shareholders, OpenAI's book valuation was $27 billion.
Last year, OpenAI's revenue was only $28 million, and due to the development of GPT-4 and ChatGPT, the company incurred a loss of $540 million for the whole year. It was only in February this year that ChatGPT started charging.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman did not comment on The Information's report.
Currently, it is not known what percentage of OpenAI's total revenue comes from ChatGPT subscriptions and application programming interface (API) services. However, an insider revealed that in March this year, ChatGPT had 1-2 million subscribers who needed to pay $20 per month.
According to The Information, OpenAI is signing large agreements with clients to access its GPT-4 model.
For example, Jane Street, the most mysterious top-tier trading firm on Wall Street, is currently a customer of the GPT-4 API service. An insider familiar with the situation revealed to The Information that Jane Street has reserved dedicated server capacity for the software. Altman told some developers earlier this year that only customers who spend at least $100,000 per year can access dedicated capacity.
Other customers of the GPT-4 API service include video conferencing tool Zoom, website development tool Wix, note-taking application Notion, payment company Stripe, language learning application Duolingo, enterprise software company Databricks, as well as Cursor and Bito (two startups selling automation code).
In addition, companies such as IKEA, Volvo, and Coca-Cola purchase OpenAI's GPT-4 API service through Microsoft's Azure cloud service. Microsoft claims that this service provides more privacy and security guarantees than using ChatGPT alone.
It is worth mentioning that OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Enterprise for large enterprises, providing enterprise-level security, privacy, and advanced data analysis capabilities. In the future, ChatGPT Business will also be introduced for smaller enterprises. OpenAI has officially sounded the horn for entering the enterprise user market.
