Despite declines in some categories, the outlook for retail sales remains positive, supported by local demand recovery and inbound tourism growth.

- The Census and Statistics Department reported that Hong Kong's retail sales in March 2026 reached an estimated HKD 33.9 billion, marking a 12.8% increase compared to March 2025, surpassing market expectations of 9.4%.  
- Sales of automobiles and parts surged by 80.8% in March, driven by a tax incentive for electric vehicles, while overall retail sales for Q1 2026 also rose by 12.1% year-on-year.  
- A government spokesperson highlighted the positive outlook for retail sales, supported by recovering local demand, rising inbound tourism, and a favorable macroeconomic environment.

G Sachs has raised its 2026 GDP growth forecast for Hong Kong to 4.6% from 2.4%, following a strong 5.9% YoY growth in 1Q26, surpassing expectations of 3.5%. The growth was driven by inventory accumulation and increased private consumption. However, G Sachs warns that the boost from inventory restocking may be temporary. Goods exports rose 23.8% YoY, while imports increased by 29.9%, leading to a wider trade deficit. Services export growth slowed to 3.5%.
