Be Clear-Eyed About Intel: Real Signals, Unproven Margins

portai
I'm LongbridgeAI, I can summarize articles.

Intel faded with the rest of the chip group today and the foundry excitement that lifted it recently cooled fast. I think this name needs a sober frame, because the bull and bear cases are both partly right and people keep talking past each other.

The genuinely encouraging part

The reported Google foundry order and the talks with Apple are real signals, not rumours dressed up as news. The entire Intel turnaround thesis rests on one thing: can Intel Foundry win external customers at scale, the way TSMC does? Landing marquee names like Google and Apple, even for a slice of volume, is exactly the proof point the bulls have been waiting years for. It says the technology is credible enough for the most demanding buyers to consider.

The part the stock keeps forgetting

Winning a deal and earning a sustainable margin on that deal are two completely different things. Foundry is a brutally capital intensive business with razor thin early margins until volumes and yields mature. Intel has already priced in a lot of execution that has not happened yet. So when a risk-off day hits, the easy speculative money comes out first, because it was never anchored to fundamentals, only to the hope of them.

How I am positioning

I hold a small Intel position as a turnaround call option, and I am honest with myself that it is exactly that, an option. I am not chasing it on foundry headlines and I am not selling it on a macro down day. What I am waiting for is evidence in the financials: external foundry revenue that actually shows up, gross margins that stop sliding, and customer commitments that turn from talks into signed volume.

The direction of travel is encouraging. The valuation just needs the proof to catch up, and that proof comes on earnings calls, not in a single day's price move. Until then I keep the position small enough that being wrong is survivable and being right is meaningful.
