Mattel: Could a Takeover Unlock Value?
Mattel is finding itself in an awkward position. The Barbie maker remains home to some of the world’s strongest toy brands, yet investors are increasingly asking whether the company is better off under new ownership.
A recent CNBC report highlighted growing shareholder pressure for Mattel to consider a sale as growth stalls. That is hardly surprising given the latest numbers.
FY2026 has been mixed. Second-quarter revenue grew 10% to US$1.13 billion, but gross margin slipped to 48.2% while adjusted operating income plunged 59% to US$39 million. Barbie billings fell 16%, although Hot Wheels and action figures continued to perform well. Management expects full-year revenue growth of just 3–6%.
Valuation is where the debate gets interesting. At around US$16 a share, Mattel trades at roughly 12–13 times forward earnings. That does not look demanding, particularly for a company with valuable intellectual property and globally recognised brands. But the discount also reflects slowing growth, weaker profitability and a sizeable debt burden.
Technically, the stock has regained momentum following takeover speculation, but the longer-term trend still needs to prove itself. Chasing the rally could therefore be risky.
For existing shareholders, holding rather than rushing for the exit may make sense while strategic alternatives remain on the table. A sale to a private or strategic investor could potentially unlock value that the public market has failed to recognise.
But there is an important distinction: a takeover premium is not the same as a turnaround. If no credible buyer emerges, investors will once again have to judge Mattel on its underlying earnings.
For shareholders, the real question is whether Mattel is undervalued—or simply a great collection of brands trapped inside a business struggling to grow.
