Jardine Is Selling Its Past — But What Is It Building Next?
What happens when a conglomerate starts selling the businesses investors know it for? Jardine Matheson Southeast Asia is reshaping itself, and the real investment story may only be emerging now.
Fundamentals: The group reduced corporate net debt from US$577 million to US$286 million in 1H2026. Selling its Singapore and Malaysian motor dealerships for approximately S$265 million could further simplify the business, leaving greater emphasis on Astra International and investments in Vietnam.
Valuation: At S$23.70 on 16 October 2026, the shares traded at approximately 7.3 times trailing earnings and 0.41 times book value. However, a conglomerate discount may persist, and headline ratios can be distorted by portfolio changes and special distributions.
Technicals: The share price fell sharply in October and closed below its recent trading range. The S$23.40–24.00 area is a near-term level to watch; reclaiming S$25 would suggest improving momentum. A verified current RSI and moving-average crossover signal are unavailable.
Existing shareholders: Debt reduction and capital returns are encouraging, but monitor the value of the remaining holdings and how proceeds are redeployed.
Prospective investors: A low P/B ratio alone is not enough. Assess the underlying value of Astra and other investments, corporate costs and the price after distributions.
The next test is whether the streamlined portfolio delivers stronger per-share value.
