Currently, the pure electric vehicle penetration rate exceeding 30% as mentioned by Akio Toyoda only persists in Nordic countries like Norway and Sweden. The characteristics are that both the government and the public have unique environmental awareness—the government pushes policies extremely aggressively, while the public tolerates it due to limited commuting ranges and affordable green electricity prices.
However, the situation in other countries globally is more complex. Even China, which has gone all-in on pure EVs, is now seeing a slowdown in growth. As a fallback, plug-in hybrids and range extenders are being used to support the development of new energy vehicles.
Many people don’t understand that excluding vehicles with internal combustion engines from the new energy vehicle category could significantly impact our long-term electrification strategy. We still highly prioritize annual growth rates and penetration increases. Right now, we’re in a critical phase (not just for our country, but globally—transitioning a 20-million-unit market is like being the first to try crab).
Since 2023, the automotive industry has been particularly grueling.
