Former Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt recently wrote on X, harshly criticizing General Motors for "repeated mistakes" in new technologies. He pointed out that GM first canceled the Origin autonomous shuttle project, and previously killed a series of leading technological achievements like the EV1.

General Motors has been a pioneer in automotive technology multiple times, such as becoming an electric vehicle pioneer in the 1990s with the EV1, but failed to persist. For example, it invented the plug-in hybrid Volt but abandoned it prematurely. Its flagship product, the Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, was once leading but was later overtaken in subsequent competition.

Now, Cruise is in trouble after an accident and has indefinitely postponed the release of Origin. General Motors argues that it can continue development using Chevrolet Bolts to save costs, but this may cause it to fall behind in the competition. On the path of technological innovation, General Motors has always been ahead but missed opportunities—where will it go in the future?
