Norway has achieved remarkable success in the transition to battery electric vehicles. An interactive chart of new passenger car registrations in Norway since 2010 clearly illustrates this change. The years 2021 and 2022 were peak years for new registrations in Norway, differing from most other European countries, possibly due to varying subsidy timelines. Norway's BEV registrations have steadily increased almost every year, except for 2016 and 2023.
The share of BEVs grew almost linearly between 20% and 80%, contrasting with the exponential growth before 20% and the slower growth after 80%. Fossil fuel vehicles have been declining continuously since 2011, with only 3,700 registered last year and just 2,119 from January to August 2024. Hybrid vehicles peaked in 2021, with a smaller increase in 2017, forming a bell curve-like pattern.
Starting next year, Norway will only allow new registrations of zero-emission vehicles, meaning only BEV sales will be permitted. It is expected that fossil fuel and hybrid vehicle registrations will drop to zero within just four months.
